High temperatures and direct sunlight can significantly affect the appearance and market quality of vegetables. This season, pepper fruits exposed to direct sunlight have frequently developed sunscald, visible as pale, discolored, or damaged areas on the fruit surface. More severe damage can lead to tissue injury and significantly reduce fruit quality and marketable yield.
One practical approach to reducing this problem is the use of shade nets. By reducing exposure to direct sunlight, shading creates a more favorable crop microclimate and can substantially reduce the incidence of sunscald. Field observations clearly show differences between pepper plants grown with and without shading, demonstrating the potential of this relatively simple production practice under hot summer conditions.
Interestingly, Brassica crops, such as cabbage, have their own natural protective mechanisms. Their leaves are often covered by a visible epicuticular wax layer, which gives them their characteristic whitish. This wax forms an important protective surface barrier, helping to limit uncontrolled water loss through the cuticle and contributing to plant protection under intense sunlight, high temperatures, and water stress.
These field observations illustrate how both crop management practices and natural plant adaptations can help protect vegetable crops under increasingly challenging environmental conditions.
